Over 10,000 people from trade unions and international organisations marched through central London to mark May Day on Sunday.
Dozens of anti-cuts protests were also organised across the country, highlighting the link between low pay, unemployment, the twilight econmy and massive government cuts in public spending.
In London the demonstrators marched from Islington to Trafalgar Square, calling for trade union rights, human rights and international solidarity.
The march was entirely peaceful and no arrests were made - but this resulted in a far lower general media profile, some participants noted, complaining of the 'hypocrisy' of those reporters and commentators who condemn violence while refusing to credit peaceable protest as 'news'.
Groups taking part in the London events included members of the TUC, the Black Activists Rising Against Cuts, London Anti-Racist Alliance, and the Stop the War Coalition, as well as human rights groups such as the Progressive Nepalese Society UK.
