Peacemaking is focus of Mennonite tour in Scotland

Ekklesia is please to be supporting the British tour of Professor Tom and Rebecca Yoder Neufeld, which continues in Scotland next week (2-6 November 2014).

Tom is Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies (New Testament) at Conrad Grebel University College. Previously he served as a hospital and prison chaplain and as a pastor in small Mennonite congregations. Among his books are a commentary on Ephesians, Recovering Jesus: the Witness of the New Testament and Jesus and the Subversion of Violence: Wrestling with the New Testament.

Rebecca has spent much of her adult life working with refugees and migrants in the USA and Canada in the areas of settlement assistance, immigration and justice advocacy, bilingual education and English teaching. For ten years she ministered to the Latin American refugee community within her Mennonite congregation, where she is currently a lay leader.

Their tour is being sponsored by our friends and partners in the Anabaptist Network UK (http://www.anabaptistnetwork.com) and the Mennonite Trust (http://menno.org.uk). The Scottish leg has been organised by Ian Milligan of Exploring Anabaptism in Scotland and Simon Barrow of Ekklesia. The events are as follows:

* Sunday 2 November: ‘Saints and Peacemakers’. St James’ Episcopal Church, Leith, Edinburgh, 10.30am (http://www.stjamesleith.org).

* Monday 3 November: Glasgow university Divinity school, Trinity (Church of Scotland, Presbyterian). Work with New Testament text classes, with Doug Gay (Principal), and Sean Adams. Bert community evening worship (Ian Milligan)

* Tuesday 4th November: 10.30 - 12.00 Open Lecture at Trinity.

* Wednesday 5th November: Meal and discussion with members of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues, New College, Edinburgh. ‘Contending enmity in biblical and contemporary times’ (With Prof Jolyon Jenkins and Simon Barrow).

* Thursday 6th November: 1.00 - 3.30pm. Seminar organised by Baptist College at the University of the West of Scotland in Paisley.

Then on 12th November, at Union Chapel in London (7pm) Tom will be debating Professor Nigel Biggar on the theological ethics of war, as part of our programme of work in relation to Remembrance.
