Entries are invited for the Manchester Cathedral Poetry Competition 2016.
The poems submitted should be broadly religious or ‘spiritual’ in nature and, like all good religious poetry, appeal to those who would not necessarily describe themselves as ‘religious’. The competition encourages poetry from a range of faith traditions, as well as from those struggling to discover a sense of the sacred. Poems are welcome in any style or form and will be judged solely their merits as poetry.
The first prize is Manchester Cathedral Poet of the Year 2016 and £450; the Second Prize is £250 and the Third Prize is £150
Winners and seven runners-up will be invited to read their poetry at the Manchester Literature Festival event in October.
The closing date is 24 June.
The judge for 2016 is Jo Bell, whose recent awards include the Charles Causley Prize, the Manchester Cathedral Prize and an honorary doctorate for services to poetry stemming from her global workshop project (and now workbook) 52. She is an advocate for poetry, a former director of National Poetry Day and works for organisations including the Arvon Foundation, Poetry School and Poetry Foundation. She was the UK's first Canal Laureate and lives on a boat in the English Midlands.
