Democracy and faith in Hong Kong: a webinar with leading activists
London-based Union Chapel has announced a webinar with leading Hong Kong democracy advocates and activists Ray Wong, Samuel Chu and Ben Rogers.
This will be an opportunity to hear first-hand the cause of unrest in Hong Kong, the motivation and inspiration of its leaders, and the involvement of Christians in the democracy movement.
The webinar will be held on Monday 28th September at 7.00pm (GMT). Registration details are set out below.
Ray Wong and Samuel Chu have both experienced the harsh response of the Chinese government to the aspiration of the people of Hong Kong for democracy and to affirm their own identity. Even though Samuel has United States citizenship, the Chinese government has put out a warrant for his arrest. Ray is now living in exile. Ben Rogers is the CEO of Hong Kong Watch.
The meeting will be moderated by Bethan Lant, a human rights advocate from the refugee and migrant organisation Praxis.
Union Chapel minister, the Rev Vaughan Jones, said: “I recently read a tweet from Joshua Wong in Hong Kong, who is an inspirational young Christian risking so much. He was regretting the lack of a Church voice in support of the people of Hong Kong. I saw that Union Chapel could and should provide a platform for authentic voices in this David and Goliath struggle for self- determination.”
This webinar is a unique opportunity to learn more about the current situation in Hong Kong, to be inspired by the bravery of those standing up for human rights and to know how to offer support – including offering support to Hong Kong refugees and making representations to government.
