Nearly half of people in problem debt in England also have a mental health problem, common symptoms of which make it much harder to find and engage with debt advice.
New data reveals the effect of Christmas on people’s finances, with 68 per cent unable to comfortably afford the festive season and nearly a third turning to credit to help fund Christmas shopping.
People with mental health problems are 3.5 times more likely to be in problem debt than those without mental health problems, says the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute.
Citizens Advice has responded to the Financial Conduct Authority's announcement that more than 5.4 million loans were taken out in the year to 30 June 2018.
