The disciplinary system in prisons creates a pervasive sense of injustice, fuelling conflict and overcrowding, and should be overhauled, says the Howard League for Penal Reform.

There is an urgent need to address serious issues that adversely affect the safety and decency of our prisons, the opportunity they offer for rehabilitation and their contribution to reducing reoffending, says the Chief Inspector of Prisons.

Studies have indicated that the more complex, prolonged and persistent a gambling problem is, the more likely it is that crime will be committed.

Documents reveal that the government was warned in late March that as many as 3,500 people in prison could die during the pandemic.
