A Christian response to climate change scepticism

David Atkinson

Abstract

In June 2015, Ekklesia published Bishop David Atkinson's paper, 'Climate change and the Christian gospel', which partly prefigured Pope Francis' groundbreaking encyclical on environment and poverty. Here Bishop Atkinson responds as both a theologian and a scientist to a recent Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF) paper which accuses the encyclical of being "well-meaning but somewhat naïve”.

GWPF is a body whose stated aims are to challenge policies envisaged by governments to mitigate anthropogenic global warming. The Independent newspaper has described the foundation as "the UK's most prominent source of climate-change denial". Ekklesia rejects this scepticism and wishes to argue a well-grounded case for concerted climate action. We are grateful to Bishop Atkinson for his paper critiquing the GWPF approach.
