Why social justice is a particular challenge for Christians

Ekklesia’s Director, Simon Barrow, will be exploring the challenging nature of the Christian message as the inspiration for engagement in the world of politics on Wednesday 9th May 2018, from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, at Westbury Baptist Church

There will be contributions from people locally active for social justice concerns ranging from food poverty to global development. This is part of the ‘Learning Community: Faith in Action’ series.

The Gospels make it clear that the kind of response Jesus expected from his followers was, like his own practice, bound up with service of others, healing, reconciliation and also challenging the powers-that-be. The Commonwealth of God was and is a personal promise, but equally one seeking a world renewed in justice, truth and peace. 

As Church membership numbers continue to decline, commitment to social justice, to the environment, to the isolated and excluded, is an increasing ecumenical opportunity as well as means of people engaging with the implications of a Gospel which has lost traction and credibility as a result of the contradictory behaviour of Christian institutions.

Simon Barrow, author, journalist, theologian and Director of the beliefs and ethics think-tank Ekklesia, will help us renew the connection between what we believe and what we do.
