A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deporting parents and children that it forcibly separated.
The American Civil Liberties Union won a 26 June 2018 preliminary injunction requiring reunification of children under five years of age by 10 July, and of all children by 26 July. TheAmerican Civil liberties Union (ACLU) sought a temporary restraining order on 16 July over concerns that the government would quickly deport, without oversight or due process, the separated families.
US District Judge Dana Sabraw issued the stay on deportations until at least 23 July and pending further briefing.
Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said: “The judge once again made clear that the government unconstitutionally took these children away and now must do everything in its power to reunite them safely and by the deadline.”
