For: Professor Daniel Dennett, Director, Center for Cognitive Studies Tufts University.
A prominent American philosopher, Daniel Dennett is one of the most famous atheists in the English-speaking world. Described by some as the 'good cop' to Richard Dawkins's 'bad', Professor Dennett's 2006 book, Breaking the Spell, explored the idea of religion as a natural rather than supernatural phenomenon.
Against: Lord Winston, Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies, Imperial College London.
Lord Winston is probably best known in the UK for his television programmes, but he is also one of the world's foremost experts in human fertility and an active member of the House of Lords, where he sits on the Labour benches. His popular 2005 documentary 'The Story of God' explored the development of religion and put his own religious beliefs to the test.
