Prisons need a profound culture change to prevent people from losing their lives through suicide, according to a report published today (13 February 2017) by Centre for Mental Health and the Howard League for Penal Reform.
More than 100 people have lost their lives through suicide in prisons in England and Wales so far this year, an all-time record, it is revealed today (28 November 2016 ) as two charities publish new research on how to make jails safer.
Prisons need to change to enable staff to build relationships with prisoners and reduce the risk of suicide, according to research published jointly by the Howard League for Penal Reform and Centre for Mental Health.
